If you’ve never had a boudoir session before, it’s completely understandable to have questions.

What do you wear? Do you need to know how to pose? What actually happens on the day? How do you choose your photographs afterwards — and perhaps most importantly, what is the experience really like?

After photographing women for more than 13 years, I know that very few arrive already knowing exactly what to expect. The lovely thing is, you don’t need to.

A boudoir session can simply be an opportunity to do something a little indulgent: beautiful hair and makeup, pieces you love wearing, a few hours away from everyday life and photographs of yourself unlike anything you already own.

In this guide, I’ll take you through everything you need to know before booking your first boudoir session, from choosing your photographer and deciding what to wear to what happens in front of the camera and how you choose your finished photographs.

Why Book a Boudoir Session?

There doesn’t have to be one particular reason.

Some women book before their wedding, creating a collection of photographs to keep for themselves or give to their partner. Others book to mark a birthday, anniversary, pregnancy or simply a point in life they’d like to remember. And plenty book without a milestone at all.

Sometimes it’s simply about doing something that feels a little indulgent, choosing beautiful lingerie, having your hair and makeup done, stepping away from everyday life for a few hours and experiencing what it feels like to be beautifully photographed.

Whatever brings you here, your reason doesn’t need to be profound.

You’re allowed to book a boudoir session simply because you want one.

How to Prepare for Your First Boudoir Session

You really don’t need to do anything dramatic to prepare. Once your session is booked, I’ll guide you through everything beforehand so you’re not left wondering what to bring or what will photograph well.

1. Choosing what to wear

Lingerie is an obvious choice, but it certainly isn’t the only one. Bodysuits, silk shirts, beautiful nightwear, an oversized white shirt or something with sentimental value can all photograph beautifully. For bridal boudoir, you might also bring your wedding lingerie, veil, shoes or another detail from your wedding day.

Bring a selection rather than worrying about creating perfect “outfits”. We can look through everything together when you arrive and choose the pieces that will give us the best variety.

2. Hair & makeup

Professional hair and makeup is included in every session and is part of the experience rather than something you need to arrange separately.

We’ll talk about how you normally like to look and create something polished and camera-ready without making you feel like somebody else. Whether you prefer very natural makeup or something a little more glamorous, the aim is still for you to recognise yourself.

3. You don't need to practise

You don’t need to practise posing, work out your “best side” or arrive knowing what to do with your body. That is quite literally my job.

I’ll direct you throughout the entire session, including your positioning, hands, expression and the tiny adjustments that make a difference in photographs.

So your preparation can be considerably simpler: bring some things you love wearing and turn up. We’ll take it from there.

What to Expect During the Session

Once your hair and makeup is finished, we’ll look through everything you’ve brought and decide where we’d like to begin.

From there, you really can hand things over to me. I’ll guide you throughout the entire session, from larger poses and positioning to the smallest details — where to place your hands, how to angle your face and where to look. You’re never expected to instinctively know what photographs well.

We’ll move around the house, working with the beautiful natural light and changing outfits as we go. Some photographs might feel soft and understated, others more editorial, playful or a little daring.

There’s no strict shot list and your session isn’t rushed. If we love something, we can explore it; if something doesn’t feel quite right, we move on.

And despite what you might imagine before your first boudoir session, it really isn’t several hours of intensely posing in your underwear. 😂 There’s plenty of chatting, laughing, changing our minds and trying things simply because we think they might look beautiful.

The aim is to create a varied collection of photographs while making the experience itself something you genuinely enjoy.

After Your Boudoir Session

After your session, I’ll carefully edit your photographs in my signature natural, fine-art style. You’ll then be invited back for your private one-to-one viewing, where you’ll see your finished collection for the first time.

There’s something rather lovely about this part. Until then, you’ve experienced what it felt like to be photographed — but this is the moment you actually get to see everything we created together. You’ll choose your favourite photographs from the collection, with five edited digital images included in your Classic Session. If you fall in love with more, you’ll also have the option to add individual images or choose the full collection.

There’s no need to decide any of that before your session. You can simply wait until you’ve seen your photographs and choose what you love.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not at all. Lingerie photographs beautifully, but it’s only one option.
Bodysuits, beautiful nightwear, an oversized shirt, a soft knit or something more personal to you can all work wonderfully. For bridal sessions, you might also want to incorporate your veil, wedding lingerie or other details from your wedding day.
I’ll help you plan what to bring before your session, and we can make the final choices together on the day.
You certainly wouldn’t be the first person to tell me that.
You don’t need to be naturally confident in front of a camera or know what photographs well. I’ll guide you throughout, including your positioning, hands and expression, so you’re never left wondering what you’re supposed to be doing.
Most importantly, you don't need to perform for the camera. You can leave the photography to me.

Your first boudoir session doesn’t need to be something you wait years to feel ready for. You don’t need to know how to pose, own a drawer full of lingerie or arrive feeling completely confident in front of a camera. Those are all things we can work out together. What matters far more is finding a photographer whose work you love and an experience that feels right for you.

For me, boudoir is about creating beautiful, intimate photographs with a little bit of indulgence along the way — professional hair and makeup, a private setting, beautiful light and a few hours where you get to be the person being looked after.

And sometimes, wanting photographs like these of yourself really is reason enough.
