I think one of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography is that the women you see in photographs must have arrived already feeling incredibly confident.
As though they somehow walked into the session naturally knowing:
how to pose
how to move
how to relax in front of a camera
how to look effortless
But honestly, most women you see throughout my portfolio felt nervous beforehand too. Some very nervous. And I think that’s important for women to hear more often.
Most Women Think They’ll Be The Exception
One thing I notice constantly is that almost every woman believes she’ll be the awkward one. The woman who:
won’t relax
won’t photograph well
won’t know what to do
won’t feel comfortable enough
Even women who appear incredibly calm and natural in their final photographs often arrived carrying those exact fears quietly beforehand. We sometimes forget that confidence is rarely visible before somebody begins something unfamiliar.
Boudoir Is New For Almost Everybody
Most women who enquire with me are not used to being professionally photographed in this way. They are teachers, brides, mothers, women balancing busy lives, women who often spend far more time taking photographs of everybody else than being photographed themselves.
Which is exactly why my sessions are designed to feel calm and fully guided throughout. You are never expected to arrive already knowing how to do this.
The Atmosphere Matters More Than Women Expect
I really believe the atmosphere of a session changes everything. When you imagine boudoir photography, you often imagine something intimidating or overly performative. But the reality inside the room is usually much quieter. Think natural light, music playing softly, slow conversation while hair and makeup happens and always gentle direction throughout the session.
Nothing rushed. Nothing loud. And I think that’s often the moment women begin to realise they are allowed to relax into the experience rather than perform for it.
Feeling Nervous Does Not Mean You Shouldn’t Book
So many of us interpret nerves as a sign we shouldn’t do something. But honestly, nerves usually just mean something matters to you.
Especially with bridal boudoir clients. Many brides spend weeks wondering whether they’ll feel confident enough before eventually realising they do not need to become somebody different first. You are allowed to arrive nervous. You are allowed to need reassurance. You are allowed to be guided through every part of the experience.
Most Women Leave Feeling Very Different To How They Arrived
Not because they suddenly transformed into somebody else. But because they stopped looking at themselves quite so critically for a moment. That’s often the quiet shift women don’t expect. The photographs matter, of course. But many women leave remembering how the experience felt just as much as how the images looked.
